April 25 What’s So Great About Bilbao.

Bilbao always existed, it is the 6th largest city in Spain. The biggest port, industrial hub of the north. It’s the center of Basque government, which also includes San Sebastián, and Alava. It is actually the wish of these cities to form their own Basque nation separate and distinct from the rest of Spain. The original Basques originated from Iberians, over 3500 years ago.

So why now is Bilbao on the list of destinations to see?

1997 the completion of the Guggenheim Museum by Frank Gehry put this small beautiful city with the Nernin river running thru it front and center for the world to come and see. Besides this museum there are many other museums to visit, that we did yesterday the fine arts. Bilbao beyond clean not a speck of dirt or paper on the streets. The Spanish care about their city, unlike us Americans. Especially in NYC…. something major wrong with us!!

The above pic of Reid crossing one of the many bridges that connect the 2 sides of Bilbao. Each bridge is uniquely designed, and dissects the city in very unusual ways. The museums, the small flowered plazas, wide and narrow streets make this a visually stimulating city.
