Oporto is built on solid granite, dug into hills. It rises from the Douro River, on both sides. Total population of Portugal is 10 million and Oporto is 1 million. This area is actually made up of 3 cities, and Oporto was voted 3 times the best European city to visit. Free healthcare, but high taxes, yet many people from allover Europe come here to retire. The homes need no air conditioning since even in the summer it never gets too hot, since the city is built up there is plenty of shade thus reducing heat inside. Thd ocean and the river also provides cooler temps.
The top pic is the famous Oporto Cathedral, built along with the original city walls early12th century. Took 100 years to complete. Ot is located on the city center overlooking the original city neighborhoods.
The 2nd picture is the winding street of the original houses, passed down from generation to generation. It is crazy steep to walk, winding streets, steep, a contained city within a city. Very narrow row houses, no elevators, you develop strong leg muscles. No cars are allowed on most of the streets, maybe a Vespa can get in and out, or our Tuk Tuk. Perfect way to see this.
