The gardens are a public park that people come to hike, bike and just enjoy the surroundings. You don’t have to wait in the long lines for the castle but this was our objective.
Queen Maria of Portugal married King Ferdinand II if Spain. The Pena palace stared as a monastery in the 12th century, and Ferdinand purchased it around 1838. Construction began and the palace is actually 3 different styles put together. I will post more pics so you can see the different styles. Red was built in a German architectural style, Grey Portuguese and yellow Moorish/Indian. This is a very large palace spanning the top if granite hills. Its is really special in how they built it and the details. Thru murder of the King and one of his sons, and the other son who took over the palace but eventually was taken by the government and in 1911 converted to a museum.
