The 2nd pic is one of the remaining original entrances into what once was a totally walled in city. This gate is the main entrance to Plaza del Mercado, one of the oldest markets in Europe. At one time there were 15 gates into the city but only two survive. In 1871 the walls and gates were destroyed to make a ring road and open up the the city. Progress?
