Me on the streets of the Jewish Quarter.

An overview of what the area looked like. Ancient city with cobblestone streets and Jewish markers on the ground indicating where Jewish families lived. It has been over 600 years since the Jews were killed or kicked out of Spain. And why?!!

Anti-Semitism has always been a part of being Jew, even now. It was required that all Jews pay taxes to the government in Girona, but Christians not only had to pay double to the church as well. No one likes to pay double and so everyone needs a scapegoat… yes the Jews.

When King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were getting married they wanted to be rid of the constant fighting with the Muslims. They struck a deal with the church, they will acknowledge their marriage but the Jews has to leave Spain. Hey the church wanted its money. And so a whole community, culture was either brought to the Spanish Inquisition and killed, or had to leave. The usual story, money talks, jealously and scapegoating. Not enough time in Girona. Wonderful interesting and sad.
