We docked early this morning in Toulon, France. We say goodbye to Spain and Bon Jour to France. Toulon is the major port for the French Navy and about a half hour from Marseille and part of the area called Provence. Our first stop was Aix de Provence. If you drive east from Toulon that is the beginning of French Rivera and right after the Italian Rivera. You think Aix-en-Provence is on the Rivera but it’s actually not but within the region of Marseille and surrounding towns and seaside beach resorts.
The first pic is the main avenue of Aix dating back to when the Roman’s inhabited. As you can see its not sunny or warm, cold with rain coming. Before the Renaissance the French bankers, merchants, traders owned the houses lining this avenue. They lived in this magnificent mansion and carried on their businesses. Many have ornate carved doors, stone reliefs elegant.
