Unless you have a private boat, or a yacht this is a one way in kind of town. Very tiny spreading out from where ferry leaves you off to small streets lined with tourist shopping. This is the place of La Dolca Vita, the famous, infamous, royality. We are talking serious money, since Portofino is very difficult to get to until it was discovered by us average tourists and a ferry made it easier to get to. Generally, most of the people who work here, have 8 months of very long hours catering to visitors. It can get as hot as 110 in the summer. October the town pretty much shuts down, lots of rain in winter.
Funny story told to us about how people in the Genoa region decided they had to reduce their high taxes. Homes were taxed on the size and amount of windows. Easy solution close up some of the windows and paint over them to look real. Italians are known for their love of symmetry, balance and proportions. The fake windows don’t effect the overall look. Very clever.
