Michelangelo worked on David from 1502-04. In early 1501 he was given permission by the Duomo or church to undertake a marble sculpture, a gift to the people of Florence.
The marble already worked on by two other sculptors was abandon and thought to be inferior. The subject matter David slaying Goliath was inspirational and uplifting to the Florentines.
