This afternoon we had 3 spots on out tour. When you think of Rome imagine a layer cake, centuries of past ancient civilizations just waiting to be discovered. Anywhere you go in Rome the past exists and we were going to explore the underground catacombs of this city.

The first spot is outside the city walls where ancient Romans were buried. Why outside the walls? Romans believed resurrection was going to come and bring them back to life, and so they had to go into the ground whole. The only place large enough was on the other side of the walls. It also kept disease away from the city and the wealthy.
